Balenciaga is establishing a scholarship for Black students who attend the Pratt Institute.
The scholarship was announcedon May 7 during the 2019 Celebration of the Creative Spirit, a fundraising event for Pratt Institute, a school of art and design, reports WWD.
Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia received the Creative Spirit Award but was unable to accept the honor in person. The funds will be given to The Black Alumni of Pratt, an organization created to support Black and Latinx students at the school. Since it’s 1990 founding, The Black Alumni of Pratt has raised more than $5 million for Black and Latinx students
Balenciaga is the latest fashion brand to launch a diversity initiative. In December 2018, Prada established its diversity and inclusion council. Ava DuVernay co-chairs the board with activist Theaster Gates, as Blavity previously reported. The council was created after Prada was criticized for a Sambo-like character used on merchandise and marketing materials.
