It can be incredibly difficult to find the right hairstylist for your hair’s unique needs. Black people – male and female – constantly struggle to find a salon or barbershop with stylists that can deal with kinks, curls, waves, and weaves. If you don’t want to deal with that struggle anymore, download the Swivel Beauty app.
Created by friends Jihan Thompson and Jenny Lambert, Swivel Beauty was their solution to no longer having to endure all the soul-crushing salon trial-and-error because of their “ethnic” hair. They were desperate to find someone who could understand their hair and figured plenty of other women felt the same way. The girls became dedicated to creating an app that would be “a destination that makes it easy to build a beauty team that meets all your haircare needs.”
Long story short, Swivel Beauty is an app that matches women of color with well-equipped hairstylists. Thompson and Lambert remember the times when they would lament about why it was so difficult to find a stylist that could work with their hair type – “every time I went to a new city, whether it was for work, school, or a wedding, I felt like my only option was to not get my hair wet. I couldn’t just walk into a salon off the street and get a blowout.”
So many Black men and women have dealt with the idea that their hair is “too much to handle.” But this is no longer the status quo; Black hair has been an underrepresented area for too long and deserves founders like Thompson and Lambert who shed new light on the matter.
